A few of us in the office were discussing the reality tv show Long Island Medium the other day, and had an animated debate over whether it’s all fake or true (it’s totally true!). It struck me that the topic of death and what happens afterward always brings up some really good discussion, and we, as a society, seem to be continuously fascinated with it.
Death is portrayed in tv and film frequently, and we cannot get enough of it: The Walking Dead, Dexter, Six Feet Under, Grey’s Anatomy, Sixth Sense, Ghost. There is a new film just released called Heaven is For Real, starring Greg Kinnear as Todd Burpo whose four-year-old son had a near-death experience.

Think about the incredible conversations that could be sparked in your book club with these questions. Patricia Pearson, author of Opening Heaven’s Door finds that once one person opens up about an experience they have had, it’s like the floodgates open and everyone wants to share their story as well.
In her book, Pearson tries to decode what they dying might be trying to tell us about where they’re going. Watch her interview on Canada AM for more of her thoughts on the topic.
This book has been a fascinating read for me. As someone who has experienced a few “inexplicable” things related to the dying, it gave me great comfort in reading about Patricia’s research and the experiences that other people have had.
